PaddleforaCause.ca 2012

Paddle For A Cause 2012 was scheduled to take place over an 18 day period from September 5th to 22nd. Starting in the Severn region (at Port Severn, Lock #45) , we kayaked the Trent-Severn Waterway, ending in the Kawartha region at Peterborough’s Silver Bean Cafe. Despite being scheduled for 18 days, we arrived back in the Peterborough area on the 14th day. The fundraiser’s goal was $5,000, which was achieved on the 2nd day – $7,100 was raised in total.

The 2012 Paddle Route Map

Day 1: Arrive Lock # 45 Port Severn (387km). Un-load kayaks at Muskeys Landing south of Hwy. 400, at the end of Port Severn Road. Depart & paddle 0.5 km to Lock # 45 then 13 km to Big Chute Lock # 44 & overnight.

Day 2: Depart Big Chute (374km) & paddle 13 km to Swift Rapids Lock #43 (361km), paddle 13 km somewhere south of Sopher’s Landing (mystery night, N. End Sparrows Lake) & overnight.

Day 3: Depart (wherever we stayed!) & paddle 13km to Lock #43 Couchiching Lock (337km) #42, then onward 13km to Geneva Park YMCA Conference Center. We will be camping at the boat launch/ dock on the south side of the YMCA promontory.

Day 4: Geneva Park then paddle to Orillia ~10 km to Hammock Harbour Resort on east bank north of Trans-Canada Hwy & overnight.

Day 5: Depart Hammock Harbour then paddle ~18 km across Lake Simcoe skirting north shore to Point of Mara Beach Trailer Park for overnight.

Day 6: Depart Point of Mara then paddle south on L. Simcoe passing locks # 41 (Gamebridge) 40 (Thorah), #39 (Portage), #38 (Talbot) and stopover at #35 Bolsover (285km) ~ 18 km.

Day 7: Depart Bolsover, paddling along canal to next lock #36, Kirkfied (273km, this is a lift-lock.) ~13km. Stopover. Easy paddling day.

Day 8: Depart Kirkfield, cross Mitchel & Bolsam Lakes to Lock #35, Rosedale (253km) ~20 km. Overnight.

Day 9: Depart Rosedale. Cross Cameron Lake and go swimming. Next stop is Lock #34, Fenlon Falls (247km), only ~ 6 km today.

Day 10: Depart Fenlon Falls, paddle the full length of Sturgeon Lake to Lock #32, Bobcaygeon (222km), ~23km today. Overnight.

Day 11: Stay in Bobcaygeon and fundraise – No paddling today.

Day 12: Depart Bobcaygeon, paddle south on Pidgeon Lake and into Buckhorn Lake. Keep to N. shore, overnight at Six Foot Bay Resort or Scotsman Point Resort, ~14 km today.

Day 13: Depart Resort, paddle N. on Lower Buckhorn Lake to Buckhorn (194km), Lock #31 and overnight ~ 15 km today.

Day 14: Depart Buckhorn, paddling W. on Lower Buckhorn Lake to Lock #30 Lovesick (185km), cross Lovesick to Lock #28, Burleigh Falls (182km). ~13 km today.

Day 15: Depart Burleigh Falls, paddle S. onto Stoney Lake & then to Clear Lake, to Lock #27, Youngs Point (168km) ~ 14km. Overnight.

Day 16: Depart Youngs Point, heading S on canal passing Locks #26 Lakefield, #25 Sawyer Creek & #24 Duro (155km). ~14 km today. Overnight.

Day 17: Depart Duro, heading S. on canal passing Locks #23 (Ontonabee), #22 (Nassau Mills), Lock #21 (Peterborough Lift), #20, Ashburnham, finishing at the Silver Bean Cafe / Millennium Park on Little Lake, Peterborough (142km), 13km on final day.

Trip total was Port Severn at 387km minus Millennium Park at 142km = 245km paddled for Prostate Cancer Canada.

Day 18: Slack time for weather & other delays

Note: On Day 4, we were unable to leave Geneva Park due to high winds and large waves – Though, we recovered lost time on Day 5 and managed to get back on schedule again. On Day 13, we decided to expedite our paddle through what remained of the Trent-Severn Waterway, ending our day at Young’s Point (originally scheduled for Day 15). On the last day of the journey, now Day 14, we paddled from Young’s Point to the Silver Bean Cafe in Peterborough, Ontario (originally scheduled for Day 17/18). In total, we spent 14 days away, with 12 days on the water.

Fundraiser Finale

On Saturday September 22nd at 12noon, the fundraiser finale was celebrated at Peterborough’s Silver Bean Cafe.
